Die zwölf Song auf The Spur wurden im Frühjahr 2021 auf der Earthwave Farm im ländlichen Kentucky aufgenommen, während SHELLEY mit ihrem ersten Kind im siebten Monat schwanger war. Der Like The River Loves The Sea-Nachfolger aus dem Jahr 2019 setzt sich aus Songs zusammen, die zwischen Herbst 2019 und Herbst 2020 geschrieben wurden.James Elkington fungierte als Produzent und das Album enthält Kollaborationen mit Bill Callahan, Meg Baird und dem britischen Schriftsteller Max Porter sowie SHELLEYs musikalischem Partner und Ehemann Nathan Salsburg.
